You've heard that line, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". But in my house and in many others across the globe, this just isn't so.
Here are just FIVE reasons why we might not want to eat apples each and every day:
With hybridization, apples are now up to 6x sweeter than they used to be. Apples are naturally filled with a sweet substance known as arabinose. This substance is higher than ever.
For more on arabinose and its effect on autism, see here:
- SUGAR CONTENT
With the increase in candida our society is facing, the yeast in the body actually CRAVES this sugar. This is the same reason some of your kids crave breads. It is the carbs and sugars their body is craving. This, in turn, creates rashes, negative behavior, increased yeast infections, countless ill-effects on your digestive system, and wreaking havoc on your whole body.
- THEE HIGHEST PESTICIDE-SPRAYED PLANT
Apples are one of thee highest sprayed plants in the world. You think ONE pesticide is bad, try 42 different kinds of chemicals to ward of pests, all on one apple! You can't just peel that stuff away. Study shows that these are still found on the apple when you bring it home from the grocery store. These chemicals are meant to KILL LIVING ORGANISMS!! I don't know about you, but why would I want to eat the highest sprayed food in our grocery stores - that are meant to KILL something living?
- Why should we care about these chemicals?
- -hormone disrupter
- -developmental toxin
- -reproductive toxin
- ...just to name a few
Arsenic has been found in apple juice as well as apple sauce... yes, even your baby's apple sauce. There are natural sources of arsenic in our soil but even on the East Coast of Canada, well drinkers need to have their water tested as some geographic regions simply have higher, and therefore much more toxic, levels of arsenic. But that's not the main problem (although I won't be eating apples grown in these particular soils anytime soon).
Here's a message taken directly from the FDA. You decide whether or not these "small" and "trace" words they use to describe the toxic forms of arsenic in your baby's apple juice are worth giving to them:
"Why is arsenic being found in fruit juices?
Organic and inorganic forms of arsenic can be found in soil and ground water, and as a result, small amounts may be found in certain food and beverage products.
ARSENIC-BASED PESTICIDES were commonly used in United States agricultural production up until 1970, when more effective substances became available. As a result, trace levels of organic and inorganic forms of arsenic can be detected in some agricultural settings, which may lead to small amounts of arsenic in certain foods and beverages."
Okay, so they think small amounts of SYNTHETIC arsenic is okay and that we really don't use it as "commonly" anymore. But check THIS out:
We can't avoid it all, but you CAN minimize these toxins and education is key.
We can't play russian roulette with our children. We just never know if these heavy toxins are even being expelled from our child's body. My own children do not detox well, this I've known for some time. What we know about these types of toxins is that they increase their chances of cancers, immune dysfunction, neural dysfunction, and various other long term consequences according to leading experts. Is it really that worth it over daily consumption of apples?
With the increase in gut pathogens, leaky gut, and major increases in digestive dysfunction today, it is no wonder our children are riddled with allergies and sensitivities. There are other fruits and vegetables causing allergies and sensitivities to our next generation. People from countries all over the world, even places like Mexico, come to places like Canada and wonder what is going on with all of these allergies in our children. It is simply not heard of there. This is not genetic. This is man-made. Give my kid an apple and just WAIT 24 hours. That IgG response kicks in!! Two of my kids will have heightened irritability and cry for NO apparent reason (at least not to me... to them it's TOTALLY justified). HAh! What wouldn't even PHASE them without apples, causes a full out temper tantrum!
My husband, who used to suffer with generalized anxiety disorder but no longer, discovered how badly apples affect his mind/mood management. He has a threshold to be sure. If he or the children eat a handful of sweet fruit, the whole family will notice which one did and the question, "'what did you eat" is a common one in our household. They are simply more stable in their mind/mood management without it!
In addition to the affects of the mind sweet fruit has, two of my children get leg-pain when they eat fruit, including apples! I have my theories but I'll save that for another article another day. ;)
6. UNRIPENED FRUIT
For those, like our family, who live in the colder, northern climates, apples are not something that grows in our back yard. How would they get these fruits here? As you guessed, they are picked BEFORE they are ripened. They cannot pick ripe fruit, put it in a box and ship it, it would be rotten by the time you open it. So what must they do to get it here without the natural rot that SHOULD occur!? Scares me to think about.
Lets not talk about the environmental burden of traveling 2000 miles to get here, what does eating sprayed, unripened-picked fruit do to a body? Well, make it more acidic. That otherwise alkaline fruit is starving for it's tree to make it ripened. When it doesn't get it well it looks to your body.
It's so unfortunate that our kids are responding so poorly to the great food God gave us. But that's just it! God never made these hybrids! On one hand, we should eat these great foods from our Mother Earth. But food today is just not as real as yesterday... and I'm afraid it's just getting worse.
S0, IS THERE ANY GOOD NEWS IN ALL OF THIS??
Thankfully yes, but this depends on where you live. The good news is that there ARE some fruit and berries, which DO grow in northern climates - but only seasonally. Here are some tips to live by no matter where you live:
- Eat locally (find a farmer nearby and KNOW their practices).
- Eat Seasonally (wait until the fruit ripens and is ready to be picked).
- Eat organic and non genetically altered or hybridized (It is better to eat fruit, which is even 90% organic than 0% organic - so don't fall into the trap the media feeds you that says things like, "organic is not REALLY organic". This line of rationale is not rationale at all if you give up organic for this reason. Sure it would be best if it was grown in your own back yard and no pesticides fall on it. But comparing a non-organic apple, sprayed with over 40 different toxic pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, with little respect for our environment or our kid's health is a FAR cry from the four or five, sprayed by the organic farmer. I know which food I will choose).
4. Eat more sprouts (choosing the right sprouts and the right variety will be FAR more nutritious than the orange flown in from Florida - and you can eat them fresh from your kitchen all year round!!
Sprouts and dark green leafy greens may not taste as sweet as that apple you eat from your grocery store, but that's just it... we need to get away from being non-thinking eaters who put in our mouths whatever our eyes and tongue desire!! These are feeding into our habits and our addictions and there is just no thought process to this. We need to research what this body of ours NEEDS and what is GOOD for it and then choose what we're going to put in our mouths. Eating out of enjoyment is fine, less than 25% of the time... but it seems like this is what our culture does ALL of the time and it's heartbreaking.
5. You can get the same nutrients from other sources - I believe we need to eat many different colors of food. I eat greens all the time so I don't have to worry about needing to eat green apples. My vitamin C comes from my sprouts (see chart above), leafy greens, organic red and yellow peppers (which are, technically, fruit), cabbage, and so on. You simply don't NEED apples to thrive.
So, maybe that one apple won't harm your body and maybe even 20 won't. But eating it every day to keep the doctor away? Our family does not eat sweet fruit and we are healthier than ever before when we maintain eating sprouts. Maybe we need to rethink what we've been taught over the years and challenge the idea that what once was good for us, may simply not be the same food it is today.
