I just returned from the most AMAZING and INSPIRATIONAL Summit with doTERRA. It left me feeling revitalized and energetic - and it also prompted me to revisit my ‘Strengths Finder’ list and acknowledge some of my own strengths and struggles. (To find your strengths, check out this link!)
It was amazing to watch how much each and every leader has grown in their own personal development. We only see each other a few times per year, so the growing maturity of others and ourselves is much easier to see.
Picture this - One energy-filled room packed with powerful leaders. It’s difficult to stay connected to your own truth while you are surrounded by all of that powerful energy. One of these wise leaders reminded me that we are all part of the landscape. But, that landscape would be quite boring if it was just ONE kind of tree or mountain...powerful, right?? It reminded me that a beautiful orange tree has amazing benefits to our bodies: Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Fiber, Calcium, etc yet, our bodies would die if that’s ALL that we ate. In addition, we need the nutrition of the dark leafy greens, the good fat from the avocado, the protein from the nut trees.
In a room like we had at this Summit, we can have glimpses where we forget that we are our own beautiful and powerfully unique gift to the world. When we spend our time comparing ourselves to others - “I don’t have that leader’s strength”, “I’m not as fast as that leader” - we have the tendency to dim our own light. I was reminded that as we stand in our OWN STORY and embrace our OWN TRUTH, as we stand tall in our OWN JOURNEY, we ARE a gift to the world and the world suffers if we don’t bring THAT gift to light.
STOP ASKING PEOPLE TO BE LIKE YOU!!
This was a big Ah-Ha moment for me at Summit. I often hear things like “The best way to do doTERRA is….” or “Don’t do this in your business because…”
Don’t get me wrong - I know that we say these things from a good place. We want to help our leaders to avoid the struggles that we endured along our journey. What we need to remember is that one person’s struggle is not always another’s.
For example, when you tell people to “stop coaching those who have blockages” stating that they are “a business coach, not a therapist”, you may just be interfering with their greatest gift. For me, as a woman with a degree in Psychology, this is the part of my business that lights me up! Or asking me to ignore messages, turn off my phone or only talk to my Frontline? My top strength is being a WOO (Winning Others Over)...and this is THE very thing that makes me WANT to keep going in my business. Once you remove the element of communication paired with teaching and learning from a variety of people in my organization, I lose my mojo! Telling me that I should be more organized or structured? Forget it!! My ‘Adaptability” strength would rather I stick a pencil in my eye than structure my day!!
I am learning to be careful not to expect that my own individual strengths should be duplicated by my own leaders. That is why cross-team collaboration is so genius! We are building our own landscape of diverse leaders! So thankful that doTERRA fosters a culture for this!
STOP THE JUDGEMENT OF OTHERS
We all have our own weaknesses and some are just more obvious than others. Often times judgement or gossip can accompany the imperfect and we need to remember to love each other while embracing each of those imperfections. We each have observations that we can make about how we may want to be or how we want to do things in our business. However, something about one or more leaders or what they’ve accomplished can bump up against our wounds.
Rather than looking inward, our own insecurities can cause us to turn outward. When we feel inadequate, rejected, abandoned or just simply not good enough, we can sometimes feel better about ourselves by focusing on things that we don’t like about the leaders that we are comparing ourselves to: “They’re a workaholic..I would NEVER want to live that way”, “I don’t like how they treated so and so on their team”, “Did you hear that their team doesn’t like them?”
I was taught a long time ago (An amazing and wise guru, Brianne Hovey, taught me) that when we bring up the negative energy (certain people evoke negative emotions in us), they are simply a mirror to what we may need to look at in ourselves. I have since seen these beautiful mirror images as powerful gifts to my life; gifts to help me look within. And sometimes it is hard to sit with. It’s much easier to do the opposite. But when we do the thing that is hard, WOAH, there is a rebirthing on the other side. When you look at those reflections in the mirror, your old patterns will wash away and you can sit back, embrace the change and watch your business explode!
Focus on the strengths in those you see around you. Those strengths are what got those leaders to where they are today. Let’s honour them for the things that we DO LIKE and stay in celebration of that!
STOP THE JUDGEMENT OF YOURSELF
Whew...this is a tough one. I had ALOT of this throughout this Summit. When you are in a room full of such powerful energy, it is easy to feel like you are never doing ENOUGH! It’s easy to compare yourself to Suzie Q or John Doe and think “I need to be more like them…”
As I sat in this powerful room of amazing people I had to stop myself...from judging my self worth against their successes. I was here with them. Which means that I am PART of that powerful landscape. I don’t NEED to be more like ANYONE. I NEED to keep writing MY OWN STORY - Because my story is pretty darn awesome too.
The question I constantly ask myself is WHY would I want to be more like this person or that person. For some of us, the seeming popularity of a blogger, a friend or an acquaintance on Facebook, Instagram, or a popular speaker or business person can make us ask ourselves, “Why not us?” or “What’s wrong with me?”. We may lose sight of what we’re really jealous of. It’s rarely the popularity or success alone that we envy. It’s actually that we envy the love, the desire and the connections they receive from others that we feel we, ourselves are missing from our lives.
We forget that our unconditional love, our acceptance and our connections, as well as theirs, will never be satisfied in the hands of those on any social media platform or stage. It is inside of us where we can never be rejected, never be abandoned and where love originates. Some of us, however, will forget and keep striving towards success or seeking to earn more letters behind our name to our own demise.
We must be inspired, be the change. I'll be me and you be you. In a room full of some of the top 2%, not only in doTERRA, but in the world, let us continue to write our stories out of our own unique history. Let’s breathe in our own strengths. Let’s be inspired by the dynamic individuals, yet leave the particular "hows" up to us. Let’s use our individual strengths to create a powerful energy in this world!
I was so inspired by absolutely every single voice who spoke and by all of those beautiful side conversations (you know who you are) that filled my heart in ways that they could never know.
THANK YOU to every one of you who shows up and shares YOUR strength with the world! And thank you for reminding me of these very things when I forget along the way.
